Where are all the Muslims?
When there are no Muslim voices in a given space, expect to see haters of Muslims take their place.
I’m always actively looking for Muslims to join this newsletter. I wrote about the importance of networking for Muslim Betterment here.
Just today, I decided to search for Muslim writers on Substack. But when I typed “Muslim” in the search this is what I saw:
Ninety-nine percent of the posts are by non-Muslims—most of which are well known haters of Muslims.
Why is it that a search for this keyword on a newsletter platform like Substack gives almost no Muslim writers?
I have two observations:
There aren’t nearly enough Muslims writing newsletters.
The ones who do write, don’t write as frequently as haters of Muslims do.
To be frank, most of the Muslim publications I do find on Substack hardly write at all and many of them have not even written their first post—they just have the default “coming soon” post that’s there when you start a new Substack anyway.
This has to change.
And if you need a reason why, here are 8:
If you agree that Muslims need to dominate the information space then why not consider starting a newsletter of your own? I’ll even help you get started.
I’ll promote your project to my readers. I’ll share it with the network I’m building. I’ll introduce you to Muslims who are doing similar things.
I’ll recommend your Substack on Strategic Sunnah (370 subscriptions generated for others… and counting)
And it doesn’t need to be political or religious writing. It just needs to be Muslim voices dominating every field of interest.
Whether it’s cooking, fitness, history, books, news, technology, children’s games… you name it… I want to read a Muslim’s writing first and foremost.
Ready? Then what are you waiting for?
Thank you for the reminder. Will get started insha Allah
